We were only two over-zealous adventurers, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, save for the fact that my partner and I stood at the start of an epic road trip from the heart of Southeast Asia, Singapore, to the busy streets of Europe. Crazy, right? I definitely did.
But as they say, nothing worth doing was ever easy. Or logical. Or sensible. And so began our trip-a couple in love all set to take over the world with a car, a map, and snacks from the roadside.
We grew up in Singapore, this little red dot of a country - cosmopolitan in its sense, traditional; with ancient temples nestled side by side with soaring skyscrapers, but we wanted more. We were craving a journey, a tale to narrate, and so we did drive-all the way to Europe!
And, I got stories to share! From navigating the mad streets of India to munching on mouth-watering lavash in Armenia to getting lost more than once in the labyrinthine streets of Istanbul, our road trip was an experiential roller coaster.
Stick around for a dash of humor, tears, roadside breakdowns, and just about everything else that made this experience so worthwhile.
Getting There and Preparing for Your Trip
As Singaporeans, we have an excellent passport and most visa applications are pretty much a given. That did not mean, however, that we were completely devoid of red tape to get through.
First off, we had to sort out our International Driving Permits-something I must say is about as exciting as a visit to the dentist. We shipped our trusty car to India, our first stop, while we flew over. Man, it was a shock to the system.
The chaos, the noise, the number of people-all at once a sensory overload and an exhilarating welcome to the start of our road trip.
So, here's a tip: before going on a trip like this, be prepared for a change. Pack less but pack smart: basic clothes, toiletries, and the first-aid kit; not to forget your documents, of course. And remember, patience is the best thing you can pack.
Exploring India’s Taj Mahal
India was a riot of color, smell, and sound. We journeyed to Agra, site of incomparable Taj Mahal. The great mausoleum was built in the 17th century by Emperor Shah Jahan for his dear wife. It is a sight to see.
I must have been a romantic standing before it. After all, we were two lovebirds on an adventure, standing before one of the greatest declarations of love in history. If you're planning on visiting, go early to beat the crowds, and take your time to marvel at the intricate details.
Just remember: it's more than a photo opportunity; it's a symbol of love and loss, and deserves to be appreciated as such.
Iran's Culinary Delights
Fast forward to Iran, a country which simply blew us away with the amazing hospitality and finger-licking food. We feasted on chelo kebab: simple and delicious saffron-infused rice served with grilled meat.
But the real surprise was dizi-a hearty stew that you actually mash into a paste before eating, a fun culinary experience and an absolute must-try. While there, we also learned that Iranians love their tea, and it is served often in elegant, thin glasses.
This is a nice tradition we were happy to be a part of several times a day.
Traditions, People, and Stories
We feel so fortunate to have been exposed to so many varied cultures along our journey. In Uzbekistan, we were invited to a local wedding where we found ourselves whirling around a courtyard, completely out of step but laughing all the same.
In Armenia, we stumbled upon a group of elderly men deep in the heat of a backgammon game. They received us with open arms, taught us to play, and shared with us their stories of life. It touched our hearts to notice the oneness of humankind across borders and boundaries that separate men with a veil of language.
Off the Beaten Path
There were enough lost treasures on this trip that could be rediscovered. One such lost treasure was the fantastical landscape of Cappadocia in Turkey. We were just walking around ancient cave homes, staring up at fairy chimneys. And I'll never forget waking up to see a sky that was dotted with hot air love balloons.
Practical Travel Tips for a Road Trip
If you're thinking through a similar road trip, steel yourself for unexpected detours and unexpected increases in travel time. It's all part of the great travel experience.
And remember that besides the destination, there can be something in this journeys. Be open for abrupt changes, respect the traditions everywhere you are, and broaden yourself.
Takeaways
Our odysseys from Singapore through Russia to Europe were like several happenings. A little challenging but so rewarding, and I must say, we enjoyed every moment of it. We learned the cultures, tasted new food, made new friends, and created lifetime memories.
So if you are looking for adventure, why not take up a road trip of your own? Trust me, it is one journey that you will never regret. Pack your bags, rev up your engine, and set off on an adventure of your own. The world is waiting for you.
